Three Musketeers Remake

The Three Musketeers movie poster

Paul W.S. Anderson is a pretty okay writer and director. Most of his work flopped in the box office but I enjoyed his movies. Anderson decided that he wanted to remake The Three Musketeers and shoot the film in 3D. I had no problems with this. He took a classic and decided to jazz it up.

I love the three musketeers that was released in 1993 starring Chris O'Donnell as D'Artagnan, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Curry. Having seen the 1993 film several times I was quite intrigued by the prospect of the story being jazzed up.

In this remake I overlooked the historical inaccuracies but just couldn't forgive the acting. Milla Jovovich's Milady de Winter was far from cunning, mysterious and evil. Jovovich is quite good in action films but she just couldn't play the role of a seductive assassin. Those curls definitely did not work for her. She looked her best in the final scene of the movie.

When Aramis was first introduced I thought Orlando Bloom was playing a double role. Bloom was a subpar Buckingham. Ever since Lord of the Rings I can't see him playing the villain. Cardinal Richelieu and Rochford were no good either. The script was horrid, and the acting even worse. The King of France was portrayed as a dandy and a fool and looked like a woman pretending to be a man. Matthew MacFayden who plays Athos was somewhat of a saving grace. He had an awesome voice and I suppose that's about it. For a cynic where women are concerned how did he know what Milady was thinking when the time came to kill her?

The movie was a rip off of Pirates of the Caribbean, and while the settings were exquisite the script and acting cannot be excused. The movie hints at a sequel which could be interesting since annoyingly there wasn't the obvious ending to Alexandre Dumas masterpiece.
